What is Gum Recession?

Types of Gum Grafts

A piece of gum tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth and attached directly to the area needing coverage. This is effective but may have slightly different color or texture.
Pedicle Graft
Tissue is taken from adjacent gum and partially separated so it remains attached to its original blood supply. This maintains excellent blood flow and healing.
Allograft or Xenograft
Processed tissue from a tissue bank or animal source. Eliminates the need for a donor site on your own mouth, reducing discomfort and healing time.

What is Bone Loss?
Periodontal disease, tooth loss, or trauma can result in significant bone loss in your jaw. Without adequate bone, dental implants cannot be placed, and remaining teeth may become loose. Bone grafting can rebuild this critical supporting structure.

Bone Graft Materials
Autograft (Your Own Bone)

Allograft (Donor Bone)
Processed bone from a tissue bank. This eliminates the need for an additional surgical site and reduces healing time, though results may be slightly less predictable than autografts.
Xenograft (Animal-Derived)
Processed bone from animal sources (usually bovine). Biocompatible and effective at stimulating your body's natural bone regeneration process.
Synthetic Graft Material
Lab-created materials that provide a scaffold for bone regeneration. Effective and eliminate disease transmission risks associated with donor materials.
The Grafting Procedures
Gum Grafting Procedure
- Anesthesia: Local anesthetic numbs the surgical area and donor site
- Donor tissue harvest: Graft material is carefully harvested from the palate or another source
- Graft placement: The graft is positioned over the exposed root and secured with sutures
- Closure: The donor site is closed with sutures
- Post-op: Careful aftercare promotes successful healing and integration
Bone Grafting Procedure
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable, and we can discuss sedation options for anxious patients
- Bone harvest: If using autograft, bone is harvested from the predetermined donor site
- Surgical access: The jaw is exposed to access the area needing bone
- Graft placement: Bone graft material is carefully placed and packed into the defect
- Membrane placement: Often a protective membrane is placed over the graft
- Closure: The surgical site is closed with sutures
- Osseointegration: Over 3-9 months, your bone remodels and incorporates the graft
