Professional Cleanings & Checkups

The foundation of excellent oral health

Your First Line of Defense

Regular dental cleanings and routine checkups are the cornerstone of preventive dentistry. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can't reach, while comprehensive exams help us catch problems early before they become serious.

At Forever Smiles Turlock, we recommend professional cleanings twice yearly to maintain optimal oral health and keep your smile bright and healthy for life.

Why Professional Cleanings Matter

Prevention is better than treatment

🦷

Removes Buildup

Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can accumulate along the gum line. Our professional scaling removes this buildup that home care cannot.

👁️

Early Detection

During your cleaning appointment, we thoroughly examine your mouth for signs of cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems before they become serious.

Cosmetic Benefits

Professional cleanings remove surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, and other substances, leaving your teeth brighter and your smile more radiant.

💪

Prevents Disease

Regular cleanings help prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and bone loss. Maintaining gum health also supports your overall systemic health.

💰

Saves Money

Preventive care costs far less than treating cavities, gum disease, or other advanced dental problems. Regular cleanings protect your investment.

😁

Maintains Confidence

Clean teeth and healthy gums mean better breath, a brighter smile, and the confidence to show off your teeth with pride.

What Happens During Your Appointment

Your cleaning and checkup appointment typically lasts 60 minutes and includes several important components:

Comprehensive Examination

We examine your entire mouth, including:

  • Teeth Inspection: Checking for cavities, cracks, or previous fillings that need repair
  • Plaque & Tartar Assessment: Evaluating buildup near the gum line and between teeth
  • Gum Health Check: Examining gum tissue for signs of gingivitis or gum disease
  • Oral Cancer Screening: Checking the neck, palate, and throat for any unusual growths or lesions
  • Tongue Inspection: Examining the tongue for abnormalities, discoloration, or concerning changes
  • Bite Assessment: Evaluating how your upper and lower teeth meet

Professional Scaling

Using specialized instruments, we carefully remove tartar and hardened plaque that brushing alone cannot remove. The scaling process includes:

  • Removal of tartar above the gum line (supragingival scaling)
  • Removal of tartar below the gum line (subgingival scaling)
  • Cleaning between teeth and in tight spaces
  • Attention to areas most prone to buildup

Professional Flossing

We use professional floss and tools to thoroughly clean between your teeth and below the gum line, removing debris and plaque your home floss might miss.

Polish & Fluoride

After scaling, we polish your teeth with a gentle abrasive paste to remove surface stains and leave your teeth smooth and shiny. We may apply fluoride treatment to strengthen your enamel.

Oral Health Education

We provide personalized guidance on improving your home care routine, discuss any concerns we've identified, and answer your questions about maintaining optimal oral health.

Understanding Plaque & Tartar

What are they and why do they matter?

Plaque

What it is: A sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth and gums.

Where it forms: Plaque develops on all tooth surfaces, especially along the gum line and between teeth.

Why it's harmful: The bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel, causing cavities. Plaque also irritates gums, leading to gingivitis and gum disease.

How to remove it: Daily brushing and flossing removes most plaque. Professional cleanings remove plaque your home care misses.

Tartar

What it is: Hardened plaque that has calcified on your teeth. Also called calculus.

Where it forms: Tartar typically accumulates along the gum line and under the gums, especially near salivary glands.

Why it's harmful: Once plaque hardens into tartar, it cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Tartar creates rough surfaces where more plaque and bacteria can accumulate.

How to remove it: Only professional scaling can remove tartar. Regular professional cleanings prevent excessive tartar buildup.

How Often Should You Visit?

The American Dental Association recommends professional cleanings at least twice yearly. However, your individual needs may vary:

Standard Schedule (Twice Yearly)

Most patients with good oral health benefit from cleanings every 6 months. This frequency prevents significant tartar and plaque buildup while maintaining optimal oral health.

More Frequent Visits May Be Needed If You Have:

  • Active gum disease or a history of periodontitis
  • Diabetes or other systemic health conditions
  • Immune system compromise
  • Smoking habits
  • Genetic predisposition to gum disease
  • Poor oral hygiene practices
  • Tendency to accumulate tartar quickly

During your appointment, we'll assess your individual risk factors and recommend the ideal cleaning schedule for your situation.

Between Professional Cleanings

Professional cleanings every six months work best when combined with excellent at-home care:

Daily Brushing

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily (morning and night)
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or electric toothbrush
  • Brush for at least 2 minutes
  • Use fluoride-containing toothpaste
  • Brush all surfaces: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces
  • Pay special attention to the gum line

Daily Flossing

  • Floss at least once daily, preferably before bedtime
  • Use 12-18 inches of floss for each session
  • Floss between every tooth, reaching below the gum line
  • Use gentle sawing motions to avoid snapping floss
  • If traditional floss is difficult, try floss picks or water flossers

Mouthwash & Rinse

  • Rinse with water after meals to remove debris
  • Consider an antimicrobial or fluoride rinse if recommended
  • Use mouthwash as a supplement to, not a replacement for, flossing

Lifestyle Choices

  • Limit sugary foods and drinks
  • Avoid or reduce carbonated beverages
  • Don't use tobacco products
  • Moderate alcohol consumption
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet
